We Will Move…When the Cloud Moves: Part Two

Posted 3 hours ago

Part Two What NOT to Do While Waiting in Transition The saints who were led by pastor James, the brother of Jesus, lived in difficult transition times.  Having been chased out of Jerusalem and scattered all over the place due to persecution, probably by King Herod and/or the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem (covering the events between Acts 7-12).  No doubt during these difficult days the [Link]

YOUR FAITH MUST BE PRACTICAL

Posted 9 hours ago

“As the Lord has called everyone, so let him walk" 1 Corinthians 7:17. Religion which has no practical impact on our daily lives quickly becomes a vague, abstract notion that amounts to nothing. Yet many have nothing more than an empty profession to prove they are Christians. They are like the cinnamon tree whose outer bark is more valuable than all else that remains. The apostle speaks of such people in his letter to Titus: "They profess that they know … [Link]

What is the Christian's Purpose or Mission?

Posted 10 hours ago

What is Your Mission? If it to please God then you will have to be open to the transforming work of God in your spirit, your soul (mind, will and emotions) and your body.
When Jesus came He fulfilled hundreds of prophecies concerning the Messiah, which was promised and did so in such a way that anyone who believed the written Word or Old Testament could believe He was the Messiah.
Jesus was very clear about His mission and about what we … [Link]

Turning down a request for mentorship in three [not-so-easy] steps

Posted 11 hours ago

This question came to me today on my Facebook page from Kimberly Jones and I asked her permission to share it here on the blog and answer it as part of the mentorship series. It's not the first time I've received this question. I believe it's a common one that many leaders struggle with and my prayer is that this will help others as well. Question: How do I tell someone I cannot mentor them because they disrespect me and undermine me? This person wants me to mentor them, but if I am going to be treated like this, I simply cannot. How do I back off from them and communicate to them in a courteous way the reason for this? ~ Kimberly Answer: … [Link]

Finally

Posted 18 hours ago

After a delay of several weeks, I finally was able to go for my stress test yesterday afternoon. I don't mind telling you that the last few weeks have been stressful in and of themselves. No matter how much you try to just trust in the Lord, when you are having pains in your chest, back and neck, fear begins to creep in and there is a war within. I really believed I was ok… but then when the pain ramped up, I'd hear the whisper in my head, "I'm going to kill you. You are going to die. Get your affairs in order." It takes a toll on you and you begin to question. So, I finally got to go in for the test, … [Link]

We Will Move…When the Cloud Moves: Part Nine

Posted 19 hours ago

Part Nine The Cloud for Us Today The cloud in the wilderness was a literal cloud, but it was part of a story within a greater story.  The Old Testament is full of promises God made to His people, as well as shadows of how He would fulfill them.  The lamb sacrificed and the scapegoat released on the Day of Atonement were shadows of the ultimate Day of Atonement when Christ Himself was [Link]

We Will Move…When the Cloud Moves: Part One

Part One Transitions in life can be excruciating.  This is especially so for one simple reason:  the wait time.  Waiting on God during transitions in life is far more trying on our patience than waiting in a doctor’s office, or waiting in line for an amusement park ride on a hot summer day, or waiting in the auto mechanic shop while your car is being repaired, or even waiting through a [Link]

The Unbreakability of Scripture

Posted 20 hours ago

Andrew Wilson raised the issue of the “inerrancy” of Scripture recently, and questioned whether the term itself was a helpful one. Some people complained in the comments that it wasn’t even a term that the Bible uses of itself. It left me wondering if there was a better word we could use and John 10:35 came to mind, where Jesus says that the “Scriptures cannot be broken”. That would certainly be a cool name for a doctrine: “the unbreakability of Scripture”, but what did Jesus mean by it?

If you had asked me to speculate what Jesus meant by “Scripture cannot be broken”, my initial guess would be that Jesus is using the language of promises: Scripture can be thought of as a promise from …

-43 Catholic Organizations File lawsuits Against Contraceptives Mandate

Posted 23 hours ago

From Catholic News Agency:

Washington D.C., May 21, 2012 / 10:39 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Forty-three Catholic dioceses and organizations across the country have announced religious liberty lawsuits against the federal government to challenge the Obama administration’s contraception mandate.

The announcement was applauded by Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York, who called it “a compelling display of the unity of the Church in defense of religious liberty.”   …

The lawsuits argue that a federal mandate issued by the Obama administration violates their fundamental religious liberty. The controversial mandate will require employers to offer health insurance plans that cover contraception, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs, even if doing so violates their consciences.

The new lawsuits join with 11 others previously filed against the HHS mandate by …

What do you do when everything is not okay?

There’s the story of a little boy who from birth had refused to speak, for 9 years, he had never spoken a word, up until that day his mom served him oatmeal for the 3rd morning in a row.

For 3 straight mornings he had eaten oatmeal – and finally on the 3rd morning, he couldn't stand it any more and he cried out, "I hate oatmeal!"

His mother was overjoyed. She said, "Son, you spoke, why haven't you spoken until now?"

“Up until now," the little boy responded, "everything has been okay."

What do you do when everything is not okay?

Let me summarize what I shared this past Sunday.

There Is Hope for Haiti

Posted 25 hours ago

Richard Farris, missions pastor at CornerStone Christian Fellowship (Las Vegas 4 Foursquare Church), has led more than 80 missions trips in the past 15 years. Of the trips he led last year, one in particular left quite an impression. Traveling to Haiti’s capital, Port-Au-Prince, and eventually journeying to the remote, mountainous village of Les Cayes presented Richard’s team with unique challenges and provided life-changing opportunities for the more than 1,700 people they served.

Haiti, home to roughly 9.8 million people, was devastated by the region’s major 2010 earthquake. The country experienced a torrent of media attention, but in Richard’s words: “Haiti is a very broken country; it was before the earthquake—and it is worse after. However, there is incredible promise if we will all …

In 2008, the Bainbridge family began a life-changing journey. Joanne Bainbridge, 48, has been transformed through and amazed by God’s plans for her family. As a missionary sent from Westminster Foursquare Church in California, Joanne has seized the opportunity to minister to youth, families and other Christian leaders in the region. Breaking Radio Silence

I’ve been under the weather a bit over the weekend. Bloggy goodness should be returning to a normal schedule.

________________

Good news for space buffs- SpaceX’s Falcon is in the air and headed for the ISS after a false start over the weekend; an irony is that we have a privately-owned rocket doing work for the most statist administration in recent memory.

The advantage of such privatization of space is that it's not tied up in politics; the disadvantage is that it's dependent on either (a) making money or (b) living on donations or patient investors. However, that disadvantage may well be a feature in that (c) living off tax dollars is an untenable option in a tough economy.

Four Things I Say to My Son

Posted 27 hours ago

You don't have to be a political scientist to work out families are under an onslaught of pressure in this day and age. Not just through divorce, work arrangements and financial pressures, and the way we deal with those pressures – but also mere notion of a family is one that various lobby groups are intent on eroding.

I am the father of two children, a boy and a girl. As their Dad, I consider it a wonderful privilege and enormous responsibility to nurture them and lead them to grow up in the knowledge of God, secure and confident of who they are in Christ.

Confusion over their identities – who they are and who they believe we are – is something I want to …

AT EASE IN ZION

Posted 33 hours ago

In the 1970’s there was a popular term among those seeking the revival of the Church and the expansion of God’s work in the Earth. ‘Navel Gazing’, was the term used for those who were so focused on themselves that they spent little time or energy doing the work of the ministry. In the Bible there is another phrase ‘at ease in Zion’. Amos 6:1 “Woe to those who are at ease in Zion, and to those who feel secure … [Link]

My favourite Bible versions

Posted 41 hours ago

I’m doing some study on hermeneutics and the doctrine of Scripture at the moment, in preparation for a training course, and hopefully will find the time along the way to do some blogging. Today I want to touch on my three favourite versions of the Bible.

I’ve read right through the Bible in several different versions. As I child I used the Good News Bible (which I now read every night with my children), and the (sadly out of print) Revised Authorised Version which I did most of my Scripture memorisation in. In my teenage and university years I mainly used the New International Version (1984 edition). I spent a year using the New Living Translation, another using Today’s New International Version, and am currently reading …

Never stop improving, always keep consuming.

Posted 41 hours ago

The new Lowe’s commercials are catchy but the tagline is killing me: Never Stop Improving.

Wow.

I can’t think of any other message I don’t need locked in my head than one of always needing improvement. Every moment of every day is filled with thoughts of failings and needed improvements. Telling a perfectionist to never stop improving is a death sentence. I don’t need the idea that I am not good enough right now validated in any form.

I know they’re talking about homes and yards, but I can’t help but resent that I am only a consumer demographic instead of a human one. Somewhere, between being happy to wallow in a life barely lived and the over-drive to never stop improving, is where I …

Thoughts from the weekend

Great having my son, George with us over the weekend.

We looked at the pictures he took of his recent trip to Uganda – wonderful stuff.

Saw the movie the "Avengers" (with my men's life group and spouses): loved it when the Hulk took the "bad guy (who thinks he is a god)" and tossed him around like a 3 year old tossing around a little doll.

It reminded me of the authority we have over the enemy – Satan – who calls himself "god".

I really like the folks in my life group. I love them in the Lord – but I like them as well.

I am thankful that God not only loves me but he likes me. Have you ever thought of God that … [Link]

Who wants to stand out?

Posted 2 days ago

If you want to stand out, simply keep your word.

Apparently it's not quite that simple. By all indications this is a really hard thing to do since so many people don't do it. Which means if you do keep your word, you are a hot commodity!

Over the last 25 years time I've had considerable experience mentoring others. I also am in connection with lots of other leaders who are involved in the same thing. What's surprising to many of us is how rare word-keeping is. Who would have ever thought that people would be amazing simply for showing up? That's pretty mind boggling to think about…that just being present would be all one would have to do to stand out above the rest. But it's … [Link]
