Interesting, Jackson, that you berate "fundamentalists" for being defensive when the very article you cite shows the directors of the film acting defensive over the exact same issues.

"Throughout much of the interview, the filmmakers spent time defending the people in the film — not because they believe in what they are doing, but because they have come to understand what most people see only as bizarre."

For the record, I'm not threatened by the film, the film makers, or your comments. You clearly haven't read my review. Read it, then comment, please. I have no patience for straw man arguments.

Regards,

Rich

I strongly recommend anyone who had a problem with this film or is questioning the purpose of the directors to read this article/interview. I hope this will expell anyone's urge to dismiss this documentary. It also dismisses most of the "rant" above. Everyone has an opinion, but your "review" did exactly what you claim this documentary did. The movie never claimed everyone who is evangelical is just like this. It's just a small group of people, but the fact is, they exist, it happened, they are doing what they are doing, so stop feeling so threatened. Why is it that fundamentalists are always feeling so "threatened" by what other people say or do. Is that how you show your strength and faith in action?

« This Pentecostal blog is always a good, thoughtful visit, and Rich Tatum's post (and the comments that naturally followed) talking about his article is something you should read. And of course, you should also read the article, Brainwashed in the Blood, that he submitted to Christianity Today online for the simple reason that he has had a chance to view the full movie — which I have not, and have said as much — and can talk about it based on real experience.

The article is a great caution for both sides, to which I heartily say "amen" to. One of the best things Tatum does is point out that what makes for great kid/characters on film does not accurately represent a whole movement or understanding. No filmmaker would chose a child who would be uninteresting on screen, and so, as is with all video from news, movies and television, the extremes make for the best viewing.

Hands down, it's one of the best discussions of the film I've read so far. I don't necessarily agree with everything he said, but all in all, just excellent. I'm looking forward to seeing the movie and deciding then what I think of the film. I don't like talking about the film without having seen anything more than those little clips.… » [more]

Watch this space for updates!

I've written a 1,900-word article for Christianity Today that will be posted in its Movies Channel on Wednesday afternoon. One day later, I will post my full-length 6,500-word commentary on the film here at BlogRodent. You may, of course, enjoy either, or both (if you're particularly masochistic).

I'll update this article with the links here and in the comments section so you can either subscribe to the article's comments feed or to my site feed, and you'll get the latest skinny immediately.
