Friedrich Schleiermacher
(1763-1834)
Termed the "father of modern religious liberalism", Schleiermacher stressed the importance of "feeling" and subjectivity in experiencing God. He rejected the historic doctrines of the virgin birth and the substitutionary atonement of Christ.
