In 1209 St Francis of Assisi prepared a simple "Rule" for his little brotherhood. It consisted chiefly of Christ’s appeal to take up the cross, his advice to the rich young ruler and his directions on sending out the apostles. With this "Rule" Francis and his companions went to Pope Innocent III for approval. The Pope approved of the little preaching band and Francis called his group the Friars Minor (Lessor Brothers).
