Billy Graham became a household name by preaching to thousands in every major stadium in the United States, by a regularly scheduled radio broadcast, and by telecasts on national networks. Decision magazine, published by his association, went to millions of homes.
Graham had grown up in the Southern Baptist and Southern Presbyterian tradition. He had trained at Bob Jones University, Florida Bible Institute, and Wheaton College. After a pastorate in Western Springs, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, he entered full-time evangelistic work with a youth organization called Youth for Christ. After a highly successful and widely publicized evangelistic campaign in Los Angeles in 1949, Graham’s fame spread rapidly. He was soon conducting city-wide crusades around the world. In 1956 Billy Graham led a group of evangelicals in launching a new periodical called Christianity Today.
